Glamour Puds - because #fruitisnotadessert, or a pudding either!

#Fruitisnotadessert (or #fruitisnotapudding) has been a hashtag line on Twitter for a while now among the gluten free types. I think it could apply equally to those of us who are dairy free, especially if, like me, you have allergies to fruit. 

I have oral allergy syndrome (it involves raw fruit, cooked fruit is fine, which is why I love a good fruit crumble) so the sight of a fruit salad is NOT at all welcome! But such is (often) the limited fare offered one, when eating out - if you happen to be dairy or gluten free, or both!

It annoys me that no one can be bothered to think further, than a plate of peeled and chopped fruit (often charged at the same price as some huge gooey mound of cake and ice cream) or even go out and buy something in (I wouldn't mind, honest)! After all, these days, there are ready made puds out there - such as Glamour Puds!

I love Glamour Puds, partly because of the fact that they hit several nails on the head for me - being dairy, gluten and soya free. Well, okay, the chocolate one contains *soya lecithin, but the others don't! 

I've been banging on about Glamour Puds for a while now. 

I first came across them a year or so ago, at The Allergy and Free From Show and The Whole Foods Market in Kensington, BUT it took me a while to find a supplier based near me. 

I did ... and then the shop closed!! WAH!!

However...

I was excited to hear a month or so ago that Glamour Puds were to be sold through Tesco!!

Unfortunately, no sooner had Peggy (who owns and runs the business) done the deal, than her supplier dropped her in it and it took a while to get things up and running again. 

But, I now know for sure that Peggy's Puds are in Tesco, because I've seen them for myself!

The Tesco nearest me, has not just one but three of the puds!!

And, well, you know me... I had to buy one of each - just as an aide memoir of course ;)

Tonight I started with the Hot Chocolate Fudge Pudding. 

This isn't the best photo, I've ever taken, 'cos having had a couple of days of deprivation (due to a tummy bug), I couldn't wait that long to get stuck in!

And, once heated in the microwave, it disappeared pretty quick too!

What can I say? It was warm, chocolatey, gooey and certainly hit the spot!


Ingredients:
Chocolate pudding (67%): sugar, chocolate 20% (cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, flavouring, emulsifier: soya lecithin), whole egg, rapeseed oil, gram flour, potato starch, tapioca starch. Chocolate sauce (33%): water, chocolate 13% (cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, flavouring, emulsifier: soya lecithin), sugar, golden syrup, cocoa powder, tapioca starch.

Manufactured in an environment that handles nuts.


Still feeling the effects of my deprivation, I nearly followed that by immediately diving into my Passion Fruit Chiffon Pie... but I managed to stop short and save it for another day. I've had this one before and at the time, it was quite a revelation to me! 


Note - soya free!

I'd never had Chiffon Pie before, never heard of it even! This is what it looks like:



Here it is!

It has a shortcrust pastry base, covered with a lovely sherberty mousse type layer, which is topped by a sort of Passion Fruit coulis. Safe to say I enjoyed it!


Ingredients:
Shortcrust pastry:white rice flour, vegetable margarine (vegetable oils, water) whole egg, potato starch, water, sugar, tapioca starch, salt. Passionfruit mousse: sugar, passionfruit puree (25%), water, powdered egg white, tapioca starch, beef gelatine, stabiliser: xanthum gum, acidity regulator: sodium citrate. Passionfruit jelly: passionfruit puree (65%), sugar, water, arrowroot.

Manufactured in an environment that handles nuts.


There is also a lemon chiffon pie, which I was disappointed not to see in Tesco, as it is my personal favourite. Yes, I know, I know, usually I'm biased towards chocolate, but NOT on this occasion!

If I tell you that it was a bit like a lemon meringue pie, only with the lemon on top of the meringue - that is the nearest I can get to an explanation. I used to LOVE lemon meringue pie (not the frozen Sara Lee kind, mind you)!! I'm hoping that Tesco may yet get his one in, as I would LOVE to try it again... and again... and again!


Meanwhile, the Treacle Sponge Pudding has yet to pass my lips, but I'm really looking forward to trying it very soon!

Vanilla sponge (67%): vegetable margarine (vegetable oils, water) sugar, whole egg, white rice flour, rice milk, potato starch, tapioca starch, potato protein, raising agents (disodium diphosphate, sodium hydrogen carbonate), vanilla extract, stabiliser (xanthum gum). Golden Syrup (33%)

And, by the way, they're only £1.49 each, which I think is pretty good, don't you?? So do go and check them out!

Oh, and if you don't see them in yours, just check they haven't been put in the ambient aisle by mistake - yes, I kid you not, they have been seen there!

By the way, if someone at Tesco happens to read this, please note, I'd like to see the Lemon Chiffon Pie in Tesco too and the Bakewell Tart special, from this year's Allergy Show in London. Pretty please??

Sadly, these are no longer sold through Tesco. Such a shame! BIG BOO HISS!!!



*I'm okay with soya lecithin, most other people with a soya intolerance/allergy should be too, but not everyone.
